Buro Happold has been appointed as environmental and building services engineers for the Crescent Arts Centre in Belfast.
The Crescent Arts Centre aims to become the premier multi-disciplinary centre for Community Arts in the North of Ireland. This will enable access for all the community to participate in the Arts, both actively and as an audience for the purposes of developing their sense of personal achievement through artistic endeavour.
The Centre acts as an important focal point for Community Arts in Belfast providing a diverse, high quality educational arts programme with a strong reputation for dance. The Centre has been prevented from fulfilling its objectives due to substandard facilities, poor access and the dilapidated condition of existing buildings.
The project will incorporate new auditorium facilities, multi-use performance space, a dance studio, large workshops, a gallery and leased spaces for local artists.
The environmental aspects of the project will consist of a major upgrade to the building fabric, the energy systems and the performing arts centre technical systems. The proposals include the extensive use of natural ventilation and daylighting within the proposed new dance studios and workshops, and innovative natural displacement solutions within the multi-use performance spaces. BREEAM will act as a driver for the design process.
Glasgow based Rod Manson, Principal, stated 'We are delighted to be involved in such a premier arts and cultural project in Northern Ireland and to be able to contribute to the sustainable and energy efficient agenda. This is a tremendous opportunity for our arts engineering team to draw upon our experience of previous projects, including the Stirling Tolbooth Arts Centre, Eastgate Theatre and Arts Centre, MacRobert Arts Centre and Tramway, where contemporary intervention has been made within a historic building fabric. Buro Happold is currently developing a local presence in Belfast and this project will advance its progression'.
