Time for Timber 2003: Commissioning, designing and constructing buildings…why use timber?

Time for Timber 2003 is the second national forum for construction professionals wanting to use timber as a modern construction material. The conference, which will be held at the Sheffield Millennium Galleries and Winter Garden on 22nd October, aims to promote innovation in the use of timber and will offer delegates fresh approaches to working with the most environmentally friendly building material.

Sustainable, beautiful and strong, timber presents enormous potential for design innovation. The conference will discuss and explore the question, “when is the use of wood most appropriate?” The speakers will illustrate a broad range of views by reference to completed projects across Europe.

Presentations range from how modern arboriculture benefits the environment, through the art and science of timber engineering to wood and timber as an essential component in the architecture of inspirational buildings.

The conference brings together both domestic and international speakers who all share an enthusiastic appreciation of timber. Architectural and technical experts presenting include Peter Clegg (Feilden Clegg Bradley), Bill Dunster (Bda), Peter Cheret, who holds the Chair for Building Construction at the University of Stuttgart, Christian Schittich, Editor in Chief Detail magazine and Professor Jean Luc Sandoz who teaches the post graduate course at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.
There are numerous inventive and contemporary ways to use timber and this years conference venue is testament to this. The Sheffield Winter Garden designed by Pringle Richards Sharratt, uses glulam timber to form parabolic arches as the building’s structure. The Winter Gardens’ design team will also be presenting at the conference and there will be a guided tour of the Winter Garden.

The conference’s main sponsor is wood. for good, the promotional campaign to increase the use of wood by the UK construction industry

Other sponsors are MERK, Consulting Engineers Buro Happold and 100% Detail
