Ponte della Musica bridge design progresses
Buro Happold has been commissioned to further develop its winning design for the Ponte della Musica bridge in Rome. The multidisciplinary engineer’s bridge design team won an international design competition for a dual purpose pedestrian and public transport bridge across the River Tiber in Rome, organised by the Comune Di Roma (Politiche del Territorio) Ufficio Concorsi Architettura.
The new crossing will join the banks of the river between the Foro Italico and the area of Flaminio. Buro Happold’s scheme, developed in collaboration with Powell-Williams Architects, consists of two leaning steel arches supporting a steel deck. The arch springings, designed in concrete, incorporate a staircase providing secondary access from the lower riverbanks.
Buro Happold will be working in Italy with local firm C. Lotti & Associati, for the client body Dipartimento VI - Politiche della Programmazione e Pianificazione del Territorio - Roma Capitale, U.O. 9 - Qualità Architettonica and Ufficio Realizzazione Ponti Pedonali sul Tevere. Construction is planned to commence on site in 2004.
