Mechtenberg bridges nearing completion

The new pedestrian footbridges at the Landschaftspark Mechtenberg in Gelsenkirchen, Germany are nearing completion and are due to open on 21 June 2003. The steel structures are the work of a design team comprising Happold Ingenieurbüro, Atelier Frei Otto Warmbronn and Hilbers Ingenieurgesellschaft.

The project consists of two bridges, one with a total length of 130m crossing a main road and the Leitherbach stream, the other spanning the Schwarzbach stream with a total length of 34m.

The bridges are constructed from two primary components - solid steel bar and a clamp detail - which afford the structures a transparency and lightness sympathetic to the surrounding landscape. The resulting bridge construction demonstrates a structural concept that is both functional and elegant.
