Buro Happold team takes top honours in Teambuild 2003

On 6 April a multi-disciplinary team of young professionals from Buro Happold’s London office walked away with top honours in the 12th annual Teambuild competition, organised and run by ICE on behalf of the Construction Industry Council. The annual hands-on event challenges teams to develop a project under simulated design and construction conditions. This year, they were asked to develop a plan for the redevelopment of the Battersea Power Station site in London.

With input from Parkview International the teams developed the project through the stages of outline planning, whole life performance, outline design, contract strategy, detailed design and construction and operation. At each stage the teams presented their work to a panel of judges acting as the client. Four finalists had to ‘report back’ on the project’s success, five years into the future.

This year is the first time a team comprised entirely of Buro Happold employees has won the competition. The team (known as ‘Innovation’) was made up of two civil (James Fox and Julia Whitwell), three structural (Sally Preston, Kien Hoang and Yasir Shaikh) and one building services engineer (Steven Lam). Despite not having an architect, quantity surveyor or contractor on board – as many other teams did - Innovation walked away with the £1,000 prize for best overall performers.

Joint team leader James Fox says of the experience: “The competition really enhanced what we are doing here at Buro Happold in terms of multi-disciplinary working. Even though we work in different disciplines, we found it quite easy to support each other, with everyone giving input from a different perspective. I think it worked well and that we really performed as a team.”
