Buro Happold in winning team for the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
Buro Happold is part of the winning project team for the RIAS-run design competition for the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE). The team, led by London-based Edward Cullinan Architects, will design the new visitor attraction at Inverleith, Edinburgh, with an estimated value of £10 million.
The new gateway building will be the first of its kind on the site and will include event space, orientation and information centres, restaurant facilities and retail outlets.
This is the second time that Buro Happold have successfully teamed up for a project of this kind with Edward Cullinan Architects. In 2001 the same project team was appointed to design the new education and interpretation centre for the Cambridge University Botanic Garden.
Nick Nelson, Buro Happold partner, comments: ‘We are delighted to be involved with such a prestigious world heritage project. Buro Happold understands the importance of the sensitive environmental surroundings and how the design of the new building will contribute to the RBGE’s mission to explore and explain the world of plants.’
The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is home to over 6% of all known plants holding 15,500 species in 72 acres and is visited annually by over 660,000 people.
