Planning permission granted for the UK’s tallest residential and hotel development in Birmingham

Planning permission has been granted to Beetham Org ltd for the UK’s tallest residential and hotel development. Holloway Circus, designed by Ian Simpson Architects, structural engineers Cantescenic and consulting engineers Buro Happold, will be a £26million mixed use development in the centre of Birmingham.

The development embraces a 40 storey residential tower block with 150 apartments, complete with residents’ swimming pool and health club, next to a 220 bedroom 4 star hotel for Radisson SAS. The complex will be a welcome addition to the city’s redevelopment initiative and will assist Birmingham City Council’s plans to increase the city’s national and international standing.

Multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy Buro Happold will provide building services engineering and computational simulation analysis to the scheme. Where possible, each residential apartment will be orientated towards the south to maximise the potential for passive solar gain. All apartments will be provided with floor-to-ceiling glazing to take advantage of tremendous views across the city.

Having recently won an RIBA competition for proposed housing developments, detailed design has commenced on the tower, and work will start on site in March 2003.
