Margaret Hickish becomes first convener of the Scottish Executive’s Mobility and Access Committee

Margaret Hickish, Group Leader of Access at Buro Happold has been appointed Convenor of the newly formed Mobility and Access Committee for Scotland (MACS), set up to advise Scottish Ministers on improving the accessibility of transport to disabled people in Scotland.

In her role as convenor, Margaret will chair the committee, oversee and monitor the committees work programme and channel views to Ministers.

Commenting on her appointment Margaret stated, ‘I am honoured and excited about being appointed the first convenor of MACS.  I am sure that we will make a positive contribution to current and future policies relating to the accessibility of transport for people with disabilities and its infrastructure.’

Margaret continued, ‘I have been actively involved in influencing the way buildings are configured to make them accessible to all. Now as convenor and a member of MACS, I am looking forward to the committee making real improvements to the transport system in Scotland, enabling everyone to access a better service.’

The Scottish Executive set up MACS in response to recommendations following research in to transport provision for disabled people in Scotland. MACS will consist of 9-14 members and a convenor, at least half of whom will be disabled, and will meet about four times a year with one or two subcommittee meetings per month. The appointment of convenor will be for an initial period of three years.
