Inaugural Time for Timber conference to be held at the Downland Gridshell

Time for Timber, a conference presenting successful new uses of timber in buildings, is to be held in the Downland Gridshell at the Weald and Downland Museum near Chichester on 27 June 2002. Delegates booking one place can reserve another at half price, a gesture from the organisers to make this key event more accessible to everyone fascinated by the potential for the use of timber in contemporary buildings.

Intended as a forum for discovery and discussion regarding the design, realisation and construction of timber structures, the one-day conference recognises the new wave of interest in timber as a structural, integral part of a new building.

Distinguished speakers, including leading architects, engineers, designers, architectural critics and constructors will present papers on particular timber design issues as well as review internationally acclaimed projects. Peter Davey, editor of the Architectural Review; Peter Ross, Associate Director at Arup; and Torbjörn Bigersson, from leading glulam manufacturer Moelven will all speak. Consulting engineers Buro Happold, structural engineers for the Downland Gridshell, will be represented by chairman Michael Dickson, who will chair the morning session of Time for Timber, and senior structural engineer Ken Jones, who will present the use of timber in the lamella roof for Hounslow East underground station.

Suitable for all practitioners and students of architecture, engineering and construction, it is hoped that both experienced practitioners and those who would like to use timber but lack sufficient confidence in its performance will want to attend. Experienced practitioners will learn what their counterparts are doing both in the UK and overseas; those less experienced in the use of timber will be introduced to a variety of inspirational examples.
