‘Four Utopias for each of the Six Stages of Existence’ - Libeskind’s exhibition in Tokyo

Tomorrow, 19 December 2002, marks the opening of the second phase of Daniel Libeskind’s exhibition ‘Four Utopias for each of the Six Stages of Existence’, to be held at the InterCommunicationCentre (ICC) in Tokyo.

The exhibition had first been conceived for and shown in Hiroshima following the award of the 5th Hiroshima Peace Prize to Daniel Libeskind in 2001, and will consist of four large-scale cardboard structures and wall and floor drawings, transforming the exhibition centre into one continuous installation. Based on Libeskind’s Jewish Museum in Berlin, the Felix Nussbaum Haus, the Imperial War Museum of the North and the extension to the Denver Art Gallery, the models reach up to 10m high and 30m wide.

The complex geometry of the structures has been translated into a modular system of honeycomb cardboard volumes with the support of consulting engineers Buro Happold. The firm’s extensive experience in designing cardboard structures allowed the construction of the entire exhibition in the ICC in just four days.

The exhibition continues until 23 February 2003.
