Buro Happold young engineers lead the way

On 7 October two structural engineers from multidisciplinary consulting engineer Buro Happold were named winners of the Young Structural Engineers’ International Design Competition, run by the Educational Trust of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE).

The competition required entrants to design a demountable, mobile information centre to serve as a base for distributing information as well as a facility for special lectures, functions, debates and more formal teaching. As the competition’s judges were unable to decide between Kathleen Ter, 24, of Buro Happold’s London office, and Elisabeth Green, 23, based in Bath, they declared both joint winners in the overall and under-25 categories.

In total, there were five Buro Happold engineers winners at the awards. Ian Monaghan, 25, from the practice’s Bath office, and Mark Joynson, 28, and Dancho Azagra, 26, from London, won commendations for their entries.
Impressed with the high standard of entries, Deborah Lazarus, chairman of IStructE Educational Trust was buoyant about the depth of structural engineering talent: ‘I am convinced these young people will be at the forefront of the field for many years to come.’

An exhibition of winning work will run until Friday 18 October at the Building Centre in London as part of National Construction Week 2002.
