Buro Happold sweeps the table with four awards from ISE
Buro Happold swept the table today at the Institution of Structural Engineers 2001 Awards lunch, with the multi disciplinary practice receiving three of the Institution’s top prizes.
A prestigious Structural Special Award was awarded to a team led by Mike Cook and Steve Brown for the steel and glass roof to the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court at the British Museum, London, the largest covered courtyard in Europe. A Structural Special Award is given for `structural engineering excellence, as expressed in a physical form in an existing building or structure`. In judging the Award emphasis is placed on the quality of the structural engineering design.
A Structural Achievement Award was presented to the team led by Michael Dickson and Paul Rogers, responsible for the innovative gridshell constructed from cardboard recycled into tubes to form the highly acclaimed Japan Pavilion at the Expo 2000, Hanover. A Structural Achievement Award is given for achievement in structural design. The category can include the bringing into practice, following appropriate development, of new materials and methods of construction.
The David Alsop Award was presented to Neil Squibbs and David Herd on behalf of the multi-disciplinary design team for the Wessex Water Operations Centre, Bath, recognised as possibly the greenest office building in the UK. The David Alsop Award is presented to ‘an outstanding structure which demonstrates excellent co-ordination of all aspects of the engineering elements and services combined with elegance, life-time economy and respect for the environment in which the structure is built.’
Chairman of Buro Happold, Michael Dickson, comments: “For an engineer to receive an award from the Institution is a personal career highlight. For a practice, it is recognition for the many people who contribute their ideas and energy. For Buro Happold, to receive four such awards for these few examples of some of our more recent work, the honour is all the greater. These awards represent the effort and commitment of hundreds of people in the practice, both technical and in corporate services, represented here today by just a few team members. We are all very proud.”
