Buro Happold provided building services to Crown Estates Commissioners Conservation Award Winner
The Stirling Tolbooth, a contemporary arts centre that Buro Happold provided building services engineering for, was awarded the Crown Estates Commissioners Award at the RIBA Annual Stirling Prize Award ceremony held at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead in October.
Designed by Richard Murphy Architects of Edinburgh and Simpson and Brown Architects, the Tolbooth won the award for the best work of conservation, which demonstrates successful restoration and/or adaptation of an architecturally significant building.
Buro Happold was involved in key elements including using stack effect ventilation and passive solar acceleration techniques as natural ventilation to the main reception area and circulation spaces; free cooling to the auditorium, using pre-cooling and night cooling techniques within the heavyweight type construction and in compliance with strict acoustic criteria.
The £6m lottery-funded transformation of this A- Listed historic landmark includes a 200-seater auditorium, community meeting rooms, studio, rehearsal and recording space, an information point, and a café/bar and restaurant.
