Buro Happold launches Archimedes, a major new training and development programme

Buro Happold has launched a major new training and development programme. The Archimedes project is at the heart of Buro Happold’s determination to be a leading international engineering consultancy, by providing tailor-made training opportunities for Buro Happold staff. It is the culmination of a year-long development research and consultation process, that has resulted in a range of training programmes geared to address the needs of engineers as they fulfil specific roles. The new Archimedes programme is to be shared across all international offices.

The integrated programme is divided into a series of modules recognising the importance of rounded individuals with a holistic view of a project’s requirements, and a breadth of understanding of Buro Happold’s range and depth of services.
‘Leadership is vital to the continued success of the firm,’ says Gavin Thompson, Buro Happold partner responsible for personnel, learning and development. ‘Job leaders, running a single discipline team, are to receive training to enhance their skills in communication, managing relationships and resources. Buro Happold considers the Project Leader role as pivotal. These are people who can pull a project together and ensure that strong commercial decisions are being made for the benefit of client and the practice. The Project Leader programme covers building understanding of other disciplines we offer, factual knowledge such as managing risk and regulatory frameworks, and softer skills such as teamworking and negotiation.’

Finally, the Group Leader programme for senior managers will focus on strategic planning, confidence in preparing budgets and appreciation of factors impacting on a group’s performance. Buro Happold graduate events, already well-established, are to be extended.
Greek mathematician, Archimedes, wrote, ‘Give me a place to stand and a lever long enough, and I can move the world.’ Tanya Ross, Buro Happold’s Director of Learning & Development reinforces the thinking behind the programme, ‘Archimedes embraces a whole family of learning opportunities within Buro Happold, allowing our people to acquire and refine the skills they need, not just in the field of consulting engineering, but more specifically as Buro Happold engineers. Moreover as Buro Happold engineers able to deal with clients, with problems and technical issues with consummate skill and professionalism. We hope that we will be able to move the world of construction using these tools.’
