Ponte della Musica Bridge International competition - Winners announced
Buro Happold and Powell-Williams Architects win Ponte della Musica Bridge International competition
Buro Happold and Powell-Williams Architects have won an international design competition for a dual purpose pedestrian and public transport bridge across the River Tibre in Rome organised by the Comune Di Roma (Politiche del Territorio) Ufficio Concorsi Architettura.
The new crossing with a clearance span of 170m will join the banks of the River between the Foro Italico and the area of Flaminio. The new bridge is estimated to cost £2.3m, with work planned to commence on site in the beginning of 2001. The winning scheme, developed in collaboration with Powell-Williams Architects, consists of two leaning steel arches supporting a steel deck. The arch springings, designed in concrete, incorporate a staircase providing secondary access from the lower river banks.
The judges commented that the scheme “fulfils the requirements of clarity and efficiency set out in the competition brief, and satisfies a dual objective: it underlines the relationship between the structure and the urban context and it is attractive for public use. The architectural solution is simple and harmonious, and relates well to the urban context on each side of the river.” The winning entry was chosen from a field of 104 submissions.

Falminio is currently being redeveloped to become the focus of the cultural and social activity in Rome, with prestigious projects such as the new Auditorium by Renzo Piano, currently under construction and the Centro dell'Arte Contemporanea designed by Zaha Hadid due to start on site shortly.
