Buro Happold appointed by Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital Trust

Buro Happold has been appointed by the Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital Trust to provide structural engineering, fire engineering, and planning supervision for the new £33m children's hospital.

Buro Happold has been appointed by the Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital Trust to provide structural engineering, fire engineering, and planning supervision for the new £33m children's hospital, the Evelina Children's Hospital, to be built at Guy's & St Thomas', London, designed by architects Michael Hopkins and Partners.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) competition-winning design is entirely funded by the Charitable Fund for St Thomas' Hospital. The brief provided by the Trust was for a landmark building, exciting, fun and friendly, yet with a design necessarily innovative to deliver an efficient, cost-effective and functional hospital. The competitions committee decided that Michael Hopkins and Partners design met all objectives.

Nigel Hiorns, of Buro Happold, commented, "This is an exciting project, and one with which Buro Happold is delighted to be involved.  Our healthcare experience has clearly demonstrated the benefits of innovative engineering for hospital design, creating significantly improved building performance and value. The Evelina Children's Hospital represents the design approach of the future."

The Evelina Children's Hospital, located on the St Thomas Riddell House site, Lambeth Palace Road, will be complete in 2003. The project is the final stage of a £100m redevelopment by the Trust to Guy's & St Thomas' that includes a new women's services centre and the development of a major cancer centre. The Trust's inpatient, specialist and general children's services will be brought together in the new building with facilities including 120 in-patient beds, 20 paediatric intensive care beds, operating theatres and a research unit.
