The Buro Happold Leeds office was established in 1989 by Mick Green and Peter Moseley. They moved to the Leeds area due to the business opportunities both in Leeds and surrounding cities such as Manchester and Sheffield in the North of England and to work on two major projects, Sheffield Canal Basin a £70m project in the North of England bringing substantial revenue to Buro Happold and also Middle Warehouse in Manchester. For the first few months they concentrated on local projects as staff numbers increased to over 20.
The first prestigious project won in the Leeds office was the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds. Structures and Services were the only two disciplines within Leeds until FEDRA was established in 1995. Fire Engineering had not been a discipline in it’s own right until this stage although had been carried out for several years prior to this. The Business plan was put together in 1993 and within two years the group was set up and growing rapidly.
The Leeds office has continued to contribute to the Buro Happold organisation in many sectors and developments. Leeds has been famous for it’s technical innovation and growth of specialist services since it first opened. This trend has been carried forward to this day in developing new ventures and encouraging the success of specialist services throughout every office in the practice.
